In order to meet life’s challenges and respond to large and small stress events in a healthy manner, it helps to be well-rested, properly nourished, and equipped with the emotional support tools necessary to set proper boundaries. Self-Care Basics

Self-care is the actions and intentions that help a person maintain physical, social, spiritual, emotional and mental well-being. Practicing self-care can help individuals learn how to recognize and respond to their own needs and identify which methods are helpful in meeting those needs. 

Self-care is not one-size-fits-all, and there are many techniques, but not every technique will work for everyone. It takes exploration and testing to determine which are helpful for your unique personality, character, and situation. Here is a list of some self-care activities that may be helpful in daily life and during life’s challenges.

Emotional Well-Being

Learning how to express emotions in a healthy manner, talking about feelings and trauma, setting healthy boundaries and seeking out activities that facilitate joy and calm can help with managing stress.

Physical Well-Being

Exercise, eating right, spending time outdoors, and getting plenty of sleep can help reduce stress and promote physical health and general well-being.

Relaxation and Recreation

Engaging in relaxing hobbies, playing games, meditation, listening to music and reading are all ways that may help ease symptoms of anxiety. Exploring different methods of relaxation can help you build a toolkit of activities that can help you unwind and destress.

Mental Well-Being

Learning new skills, being creative, solving puzzles and journaling are self-care methods that can help keep you stimulated. Engaging in individual and group therapy can also help promote mental well-being, address past trauma and build coping skills that help with fear and anxiety.

Social Well-Being

Having healthy relationships with friends, loved ones, mentors and counselors can help you build a reliable support network when times get tough and can help make everyday living more engaging and enjoyable. Being a friend to others when they need support can also help build self-confidence and self-worth.

Spiritual Well-Being

Exploring spirituality and working on understanding your own belief system is an important self-care practice because it can help you better understand your life experiences through a framework that brings deeper meaning and purpose to life.
